As one of the countries most affected by the climate crisis, Indonesia has not demonstrated sufficiently ambitious mitigation steps. This can be seen from the still dominance of fossil energy in the national energy supply, which reaches 86.92%. New energy development is also still far from ideal, with realization only 13% of the target of 23% by 2025.
In fact, in the 2016 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document, Indonesia is committed to reducing emissions by 834 million tonnes of CO2e by 2030 with an energy sector contribution of up to 314 million tonnes of CO2e or 37.6%. This means that the Indonesian government must accelerate the development of renewable energy, which is the most effective way to cut emissions and a solution to air pollution and extreme weather disasters that continue to haunt the people of this country.
We realize that we cannot move alone to encourage change in Indonesia. The mass media has an important role in urging the Indonesian Government to take measurable and clear steps to transition to renewable energy, so that a more severe climate crisis can be prevented so that society is not continuously plagued by disasters.
For this reason, CERAH is holding the '2024 CERAH Journalism Competition' with the main theme 'Energy Transition for Climate Justice in Indonesia'.

1. Benefits of early retirement from coal power plants.
