Research on the Impact of Climate Crisis on Coffee and Rice

Agricultural productivity of rice and coffee commodities in Indonesia is expected to decline as a result of climate change. The findings were revealed in the latest research by a team consisting of Prof Edvin Aldrian - Vice-Chair of UNFCCC WG1 - and climate as well as meteorological experts from BRIN, BMKG, and IPB. The report was launched in November 2022.

The report shows that sea level rise will lead to increased salinity, flooding, and loss of rice fields in coastal areas resulting in a decrease in Indonesia's rice production by 3.5 million tonnes, equivalent to the rice consumption of 26.6 million people. Meanwhile, coffee production is also expected to drop by around 10 per cent during El Nino periods and up to 80 per cent during La Nina periods.
