The Geopolitical Stakes of Indonesia’s Energy Path

This briefing note discusses the global geopolitical dynamics currently influencing the energy transition process in Indonesia, particularly following the United States' withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Nevertheless, Indonesia remains committed to reduce emissions and increasing its renewable energy capaciteis. Indonesia also maintains good relationships with other international actors in the energy sector, notably China, Japan, and Germany, through various schemes such as the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC).

We highlight that Indonesia must focus on advancing its renewable energy targets, strengthen its energy sovereignty, and create green jobs amid the growing interests of international actors in the energy sector, which sometimes still push for fossil-fuel based solutions. Indonesia has a strategic opportunity to take control of its energy transition in an independent and just manner for a sustainable future.
