Green economy refers to an economic system that strives to improve human well-being and reduce social risks and ecological imbalances. This is done by utilising technologies, innovations and investments that promote the efficient and environmentally friendly use of resources. The principles of the green economy include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and wise waste management. Here are some examples of green economy implementation in Indonesia:
1. Ecotourism Development
Indonesia has extraordinary natural wealth, making it an attractive tourist destination. Ecotourism is a tourism concept that focuses on environmental sustainability. For example, the management of Komodo National Park implements a visitor restriction system, preserves the habitat of wild dragons, and empowers local communities as tour guides.
2. Social Forestry
Social forestry is a government programme that gives access to communities to manage forests sustainably. The aim is to reduce deforestation and improve community welfare. For example, the Community Forestry (HKm) programme allows village communities to manage forests for tree planting, non-timber forest product development and ecotourism.
3. Organic Farming
Organic farming is increasingly in demand because it produces food products that are healthier and environmentally friendly. Organic farmers use manure and compost to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers that can pollute soil and water.
4. Renewable Energy
Indonesia has great potential to develop renewable energy such as solar power plants (PLTS), hydroelectric power plants (PLTA), and wind power plants (PLTB). The use of renewable energy can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the Cirata solar power plant in West Java is one of the largest in Southeast Asia.
