Indonesia's Nickel Mining Threatens Surrounding Environment

Indonesia currently leads the global nickel mining industry. Of the ten largest nickel mines in the world, five are located in Indonesia. One of the most prominent mining projects is the Weda Bay Project in Maluku. This project is recognized as the largest nickel mine in the world, with a production capacity exceeding 500,000 tons of nickel per year.

Nickel and Its Role in the Energy Transition

Nickel is one of the key commodities supporting the global energy transition. Its role is especially significant in the electric transportation sector. This metal is a primary material in the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, which serve as a crucial foundation for electrification in many countries.

As global demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, the need for nickel also increases. This places Indonesia in a strategic position within the clean energy supply chain.

Environmental Impact of Nickel Mining Activities

Behind its contribution to the energy transition, nickel mining activities in Indonesia have also caused significant negative impacts on the environment and surrounding communities. Early in 2025, several ecological disasters were reported that are suspected to be linked to nickel mining activities, including:

  • Flooding in Teluk Tomori, North Morowali, caused by environmental degradation due to mining operations.

  • A landslide in Dusun Towi, which worsened the region’s social and ecological conditions.

  • Flooding in Bahodopi, Morowali, triggered by deforestation and inadequate drainage infrastructure resulting from mining exploitation.

Environmental damage such as floods and landslides not only threatens ecosystems but also harms local communities who depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.

Government Actions That Need to Be Taken

To prevent the nickel industry from causing further harm to the environment and sacrificing the well-being of communities, the government must take firm and measured action. The following steps are recommended:

  • Review and revoke mining permits for companies found violating environmental regulations.

  • Impose strict sanctions on companies responsible for environmental damage.

  • Require mining companies to reclaim degraded land to restore damaged ecosystems.

  • Involve local communities in mining planning and oversight processes to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed fairly.

Toward a More Sustainable Nickel Mining Industry

The sustainability of Indonesia’s nickel industry should not be measured solely by economic performance or its contribution to clean energy. Environmental protection and social justice must be central pillars in the management of these natural resources.

With strong commitment from the government, industry players, and civil society, Indonesia has the potential to lead the global nickel industry not only in terms of production, but also in ecological and social responsibility.
