West Java & Central Sulawesi: Trends in Energy Transition

During September 2024, there was a significant increase in exposure to issues related to energy transition in West Java, with a total of 1,600 exposures across social media and online media. Some of the main topics of concern include energy transition and renewable energy, Jatigede 110 MW hydropower plant, biomass development, and the impact of drought and long dry season on farmers. Meanwhile, in Central Sulawesi, the trend of discussion on energy transition issues tends to decrease by 8.4%. However, issues such as the rejection of the Captive PLTU in Palu, the construction of a Minihydro Power Plant in Tolitoli, and the impact of climate crisis in various sectors remain in the spotlight.

Based on these findings, it is recommended that candidates for governor and deputy governor pay more attention to issues that are relevant to the context of their respective regions. In West Java, a focus on strengthening climate change mitigation policies and encouraging massive implementation of renewable energy is essential. Meanwhile, in Central Sulawesi, there needs to be an effort to ensure that the energy transition is carried out in a fair and sustainable manner, suppress the negative impacts of mining activities, and provide concrete solutions to address poverty issues that are often related to climate change. This approach is expected to address the needs of local communities while supporting environmental sustainability in both regions.
